1. Breakers That Trip Repeatedly
A breaker that trips once has done its job. A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit is telling you something is wrong — an overloaded circuit, a deteriorating cable, moisture ingress, or a failing breaker mechanism. Resetting it again and again without investigating is how small faults become fires. Note which breaker trips, under what load, and how often, then have it investigated.
2. Warm or Hot Panel Surfaces
A switchboard under normal load should not feel warm on the outside. External heat usually means a loose termination or an overloaded busbar inside — both of which get worse over time, because heat accelerates the very deterioration that causes it. This is exactly what infrared thermographic scanning is for: it finds hot spots inside the board without opening it under load.
3. Buzzing, Humming, or Crackling Sounds
A faint hum from a contactor can be normal. A buzz that has grown louder, or any crackling or sizzling sound, is not — crackling is often the sound of arcing, where current jumps across a deteriorating connection. Arcing generates intense heat and is one of the most common precursors to switchboard fires. Treat audible crackling as urgent.
4. Burning Smells or Discolouration
A fishy or acrid smell near a switchboard is typically overheated insulation or a scorched terminal. Brown or black discolouration around terminals, breakers, or cable entries tells the same story after the fact. By the time you can see or smell heat damage, the connection behind it has usually been overheating for months.
5. Flickering Lights or Voltage Fluctuations
Lights that flicker when large equipment starts can indicate an undersized supply — but flickering with no obvious cause often points to a loose connection somewhere between the incoming supply and the affected circuits. Intermittent connections are hard to find without proper testing, and they are a shock and fire risk while they persist.
6. Rust, Corrosion, or Moisture Inside the Board
Corrosion on enclosures, terminals, or busbars — common in coastal areas, plant rooms with condensation, or boards exposed to weather — degrades connections and insulation. Any evidence of water entry into a switchboard warrants immediate investigation: moisture plus electricity is a short-circuit waiting for a trigger.
7. It Simply Hasn't Been Serviced in Years
The most common "warning sign" is a maintenance logbook with no entries. Terminations loosen with thermal cycling, contacts wear, and protection settings drift — regardless of whether anything looks wrong from the outside. For most commercial and industrial installations in Singapore, switchboards should be inspected and serviced every 12 to 24 months, typically during a planned shutdown.
Important: Never open a switchboard or tighten connections yourself. Under Singapore's Electricity Act, work on electrical installations must be done by or under a Licensed Electrical Worker — and a live board can kill. Spotting the signs is your job; fixing them is ours.
